A letter from Philze Lau, Acting Director

Tao Fong Shan was founded in 1930. For 90 years, it has been a persistent but special journey, manifesting the Lord’s will—to bring the love and grace of God to the land of Hong Kong.

Looking back at the ups and downs of Tao Fong Shan and the city, they are symbolic of decades and generations of hardships in Hong Kong. Amid all the turmoil and tragedy, the Big Cross of Tao Fong Shan and its people continue to stand, signifying that it was the Lord’s wish to bless the land. The predicament beneath the hill serves as a foil to the calmness and tranquility on the top of the hill behind the trees. Speak the Word of God—tell the story of Christ among us, that it was His Word to bestow on us the gospel of peace to life. As the wind whistles, the spiritual wind moisturizes the living things in silence, giving blessings to the visitors and people of Tao Fong Shan, providing a sacred place of encounter for believers.

Since its inception, Tao Fong Shan has been focused on the Gospel, theological inheritance, and the great love of Christ in the present moment. Each of the three focuses supports and complements another, we are devoted to the Bible and uphold the theological heritage of Christianity. We aspire to spread the Gospel through the life of Christ in this precious city. 90 years ago, our founder, Rev. Karl Ludvig Reichelt travelled from Norway to Hong Kong, his love and commitment to China had encouraged him to share the Gospel with people, especially Buddhists in the land. He was dedicated to converse and exchange ideas with people humbly regardless of their culture, religion, or background.

From porcelain to publication to architecture, Tao Fong Shan is filled with Chinese traditions and its unique characteristics, all of which express the hospitality and enthusiasm of the people of Tao Fong Shan, and show the love of Jesus Christ for His people.

It is because of our Lord that our hearts feel full. In Christ, we learn about humility, kindness, forgiveness, patience, empathy, gentleness, inclusivity, hope, acceptance, understanding, temperance, honesty, trust, and peace, etc. Each of these can be integrated into our architecture, garden, or artwork. If you visit Tao Fong Shan, you will discover many Bible stories—the Word of God gently nourish our hearts and souls as the wind lightly whistles through the mountain. We look forward to helping others experience the grace and blessing of God, in time of prosperity and in time of adversity.

For generations, Tao Fong Shan has followed Jesus Christ. The light of Christ never once went out despite difficulties. The spirituality and calmness of Tao Fong Shan lie in the respect of the people for the Lord; the grace of God lies in the devotion of people and visitors who come and seek to encounter the Lord.

Speak the Word of God, follow the wind of the Spirit, embrace the Word of God—the Holy Spirit emerges from the realm of Tao Fong.
